stop spotlight from indexing drives

Spotlight can be a great tool, however if you are a tech and ever need to hook up a drive via firewire in target disk mode it is pretty much a nuisance. Therefore, it is beneficial to know how to stop Spotlight from indexing attached drives by typing the following:

sudo mdutil -i off /path_to_volume

This will stop Spotlight in its tracks and keep your 1+ TB drives from taking off into orbit. Note you can also do this while it is indexing and it will kill the process.

To turn indexing back on, simply enter the opposit: sudo mdutil -i on /path_to_volume
